External Warts
Warts are a common skin concern that can appear on various parts of the body. While they are generally harmless, they can be persistent, recurrent and sometimes a source of discomfort or self-consciousness.
What Are External Warts?
Warts are small, non-cancerous growths on the skin caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters the skin through small cuts or breaks and causes the skin cells to grow more rapidly than normal, forming a wart.
There are several types of warts, including common warts (verruca vulgaris), flat warts, plantar warts (on the soles of the feet) and filiform warts (thread-like growths, often on the face). Each type has a characteristic appearance and preferred location.
Warts are more common in children and young adults, but they can affect people of any age. A weakened immune system can make a person more susceptible to developing warts or experiencing recurrence.
What to Know About Warts
Understanding the nature of warts helps in managing them effectively.
Appearance
Warts can vary considerably in appearance — they may be flat or raised, smooth or rough, single or in clusters. Some are flesh-coloured, while others may appear darker or lighter than the surrounding skin.
Location
External warts can appear on various parts of the body, including the hands, feet (plantar warts), face, neck and genital area. The location often provides clues about the type of wart and its likely cause.
Recurrence
One of the most frustrating aspects of warts is their tendency to recur. Even after successful treatment, warts can return — sometimes in the same location, sometimes elsewhere.
Spread
Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can spread through direct contact with the wart or with surfaces that have been in contact with it. They can also spread to other parts of the same person's body.
Discomfort
Many warts are painless, but some — particularly plantar warts on the soles of the feet — can cause discomfort or pain with pressure. Warts in sensitive areas may also cause irritation.
Why Do Warts Keep Coming Back?
Recurrence is one of the most common frustrations with wart treatment. Many conventional treatments address the wart itself but do not address the underlying viral infection or the immune response that allowed the wart to develop in the first place.
The immune system plays a central role in controlling HPV. When immunity is strong, the body can often suppress the virus and prevent warts from forming or returning. When immunity is compromised — due to stress, illness, nutritional deficiencies or other factors — warts are more likely to recur.
A holistic approach to wart management therefore considers not just the wart itself but the overall health and immune status of the individual.
Our Approach to Wart Care
At Gurgaon Holistic Healthcare Centre, we evaluate each case individually, taking into account the type, location and history of the warts, as well as the patient's overall health and immune status.
Homeopathic care for warts focuses on supporting the immune system's ability to control the HPV virus, reducing the tendency toward recurrence and addressing any underlying factors that may be contributing to susceptibility.
We also provide guidance on hygiene practices and lifestyle factors that can reduce the risk of spread and recurrence.
When to Seek Professional Evaluation
While most warts are harmless, professional evaluation is advisable if:
- You are unsure whether a skin growth is a wart
- The wart is causing pain or significant discomfort
- Warts are spreading rapidly or appearing in new locations
- You have tried treatments without success
- The wart is in a sensitive or difficult-to-treat location
- You have a condition that affects your immune system
Any skin growth that changes in appearance, bleeds without cause or looks unusual should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out other conditions.
